Google+ is not very popular among the regular social network users (the average Twitter and Facebook users doesn’t use Google Plus), but among bloggers and business people it is popular. Besides, the website definitely has potential, and if more people started using it the right way it could become something bigger. Just like on about every other social networking site, a lot of it comes down to getting enough followers, and when you have just gotten started, that may be a little hard for you.
Here are 5 tips to help you get more followers on Google+:
1. Make an interesting page first
It is kind of an unwritten rule that you don’t start promoting yourself before you have an interesting page. It is a bit like going to a party, and starting to talk about yourself at once, without asking the room how they are doing, or bringing up an interesting subject first. When you are new to Google+, it is a good idea to write a couple of valuable posts, and add interesting content to your page. That way others that visit your page will see that you have something to say and they will be more likely to add you to your circles. If you only promote yourself, and don’t give people the chance to get to know you, they are less likely to pay attention to you.
2. Be active
This is the rule for any kind of social networking site: people are going to notice you a lot more when you are active. That’s why it’s a good idea to post at least one time every day. You may not realize this, but when you are not active on Google+, people aren’t going to know that you exist, and when they stumble upon an old post or your page and see that you haven’t been active in a long time, they are likely to think it’s a waste of time to read your things. If you post at least once a day, people are going to see your posts, and if they like you a lot they might visit your page and add you to their circles.
3. Use other social media
When you are done making your page, you are going to want to promote it. First you will probably want to look for people you know that also use Google+, and where better to look than at a social network where you already have all your friends and admirers following you? That’s why it’s good to promote your Google+ page on Facebook or Twitter: announce that you have made an account, and ask people to follow you there. If they are already fans of you, they are probably going to start following you on Google+, if they have it. If you posted something new to Google+, you can also post this on Facebook, so that everyone can see your posts and follow you at any moment.
4. Ask people to share your content
This may seem a little weird to you, and you may think that you will come off as desperate or just rude if you ask people to share your posts, specifically. However, times have changed and it has been acceptable on social media for a while now to ask followers and friends to share your content. Think about all the Facebook posts you see that basically say ‘like if you agree with this’, and the Twitter posts that say ‘please retweet’. There is no reason why you couldn’t adopt this technique on your Google+ account.
5. Follow others
And by that we mean, really follow others: many people that use social media forget that it is important to pay attention to what people in your circles are posting. They take the time to follow you and to read and share your content, so you should do the same for them. That means checking out pages that interest you, and adding people to your circles yourself, but also sharing content that you find interesting and taking the time to read and comment on it. And actually, following and sharing other people’s content is good for a selfish reason to: that way you will become more active and thus more visible.
